Business Model Generation is the source of the “Business Model Canvas” that has become an integral part of so many business meetings. The greatest challenge with this book is the fact that so many companies have/are employing the Canvas with so few business leaders having actually read the book! Acumen Partners has engaged with many companies where the Canvas had been employed but was determined to be ineffectual due to misunderstanding of the material. “It didn’t really help us arrive at new strategic conclusions or tell us anything we didn’t already know.” In every instance, leaders had failed to do more than a cursory pass at the pages (beautifully designed, BTW), expecting less senior leaders to get into the details. Sadly, these companies continued to implement strategies rendered ineffective by market shifts until they determined expert, outside help was required. (Don’t get us wrong! We want the business, but the Canvas is a powerful tool in its own right.)
The insights BEHIND the Canvas are far more valuable to any business leader than the Canvas itself. To see the full benefit of Business Model Generation, business leaders should hold their entire team responsible to commit to the all of the material in the book, not just the Canvas.
Business Model Generation is clearly designed to be used as an ongoing reference source. It touches on fundamental principals throughout the business strategy design and implementation process. The authors provide a very logical 9 element framework which fosters cross-team collaboration on complex issues. It is highly effective in organizations challenged by deeply silo’d departments/divisions; as well as smaller organizations in which a few leaders must execute the full business strategy.
In short, Business Model Generation is a MUST READ for any leader. If Leadership wants to employ its principals, all contributing members on the planning team should be equally committed and familiar with the tools. As a bonus, there are many well-qualified management consultants that can help your team get the most from the strategic planning experience and help ensure its successful implementation.
